Jeff Flake event forced to change venues because of security concerns around the embattled senator

Flake, an outgoing senator from Arizona, found himself in the throes of Kavanaugh’s contentious Supreme Court nomination Friday when he agreed to support the judge’s nomination in the Senate Judiciary Committee under the condition the feds investigate accusations of sexual misconduct against President Trump’s nominated jurist dating back to the 1980s. The 55-year-old Snowflake, Ariz., native claims his family has received death threats during the Kavanaugh hearings. Specifics of Emerson’s decision to withdraw from the event weren’t clear. Leonard: Frustrated Odell Beckham Jr., committed to Giants long-term, never could have imagined this kind of offensive futility

“I’ve sacrificed everything, especially coming towards this year,” a shirtless Beckham said after seeing just three touches for six yards in the first half of a disappointing seven-catch, 60-yard evening. “I’ve sacrificed and made personal changes and done all I can to be the best teammate and bring everything I can every Sunday. So it’s a little disappointing when you have to lead like this. You work way too hard — five, six, seven days a week — for 60 minutes of football. So I hate to get out there and waste those 60 minutes.” Pat Leonard The post Leonard: Frustrated Odell Beckham Jr., committed to Giants long-term, never could have imagined this kind of offensive futility appeared first on Breaking News, World News, US and Local News .

Until data is misused, Facebook’s breach will be forgotten – TechCrunch

We cared about Cambridge Analytica because it could have helped elect Trump. We ignored LocationSmart because even the though the company was selling and exposing the real-time GPS coordinates of our phones, it was never clear exactly if or how that data was misused. This idea, that privacy issues are abstract concepts for most people until they become security or ideological problems, is important to understanding Facebook’s massive breach revealed this week.   The social network’s engineering was sloppy, allowing three bugs to be combined to steal the access tokens of 50 million people. In pursuit of rapid growth at affordable efficiency, Facebook failed to protect its users. This assessment doesn’t discount that. Facebook screwed up big time. But despite the potential that those access tokens could have let the attackers take over user accounts, act as them, and scrape their personal info, it’s unclear how much users really care. That’s because for now, Facebook and it’s wa...

Cannonier: $1.2M Payment Is A ‘Major Concern’

Image
“The payment of in excess of $1.2 million of taxpayers money to the ‘good doctor’ should be a major concern to all taxpayers,” Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier said today, adding that “it is Robin Hood in reverse.” Background In January of this year, the Government confirmed [PDF] they “granted financial supplements to the Brown-Darrell Clinic, Bermuda Health Care Services and the Bermuda Hospitals Board in order to help ensure CT and MRI services are readily available to the public.” Saying it was to “offset the drastic fee cuts of June 2017,” the Government said that “actual payments will be based on services provided, therefore the exact amounts for the period of operation will not be known until the end of the fiscal year. “If the level of services remained the same as last year, Brown Darrell and Bermuda Health Care Services would receive approximately $778 thousand and BHB $1.8 million,” the Government said in January of this year. How Eli Manning and Drew Brees are forever linked due to a Draft Day phone call back in 2004

BREES-MANNING FAMILY RELATIONSHIP: Brees and the Mannings had known each other before he became a Saint, but Brees’ signing in New Orleans deepened his connection with the family, especially father Archie Manning, the two-time Pro Bowler and longtime Saints QB who raised his family in New Orleans, the birthplace of both Peyton and Eli. Brees recounted in a 2010 interview with CBS’ Katie Couric that he leaned on Archie for almost everything when he first got to New Orleans, all the way down to where to get a haircut. And he and his wife developed a special connection and admiration for the Mannings as community leaders in New Orleans, so close that the only time Archie wouldn’t root for Brees was, of course, when he faced his sons. That included Brees beating Peyton’s Indianapolis Colts, 31-17, in Super Bowl XLIV on Feb. 7. 2010. “Archie will send me texts a lot just before games wishing me luck,” Brees said in the 2010 interview. “There was one time where we were about to play Eli an...

‘God Friended Me’ doesn’t care what you believe, as long as you believe in something

It’s almost impossible to judge a TV show on one episode, but “God Friended Me” has promise and deserves credit for being a truly original story in the age of revivals. The pilot is steeped in bad millennial clichés — Cara hasn’t turned in an article in six weeks, Miles’ best friend Rakesh (Suraj Sharma) won’t stop complaining about Tinder — and the title is enough to scare anyone off, but if the show can stay true to the heart of its message, it could be enough to make the nonbeliever believe, at least a little, at least in something. “The goal every season is to win a Super Bowl,” said Darnold, who will face a daunting road test in Jacksonville on Sunday. “That’s the end goal for every single team. If you’re not trying to do that, then what are we even doing, you know? So, every single time we step on to the field — practice field or game field — we’re thinking about winning that championship. But at the same time, we’re taking it day by day. And we are taking it game by game. That’s really our mindset. Readers sound off on Bill Cosby, Kaepernick and the Supreme Court

Bronx: It seems there are a lot of white people who have a problem with Colin Kaepernick’s protest. It’s said he’s disrespecting the national anthem, the flag, the military, veterans, police, etc. In case one is unaware, his protest is about social injustice. In case one simply doesn’t care what his angle is, then one should just admit to being racist and say as much; don’t make up stuff about him. On that note, I’m running a survey on that very subject. The question is this: How many white people would like to be treated the same way blacks are treated? Answer truthfully. If one doesn’t want to be treated the same as blacks, it’s because one is well aware that blacks aren’t treated the same as white people are. That’s what Kaepernick’s protest is about. Matthews: In the end, David Wright’s commitment to Mets was stronger than Mets’ commitment to their captain

Over the past two years-plus, Wright worked a lot harder to get back on the field than the Mets front office worked to build a winner, and when he came to bat as a pinch-hitter Friday night, the crowd of 27,045, the biggest crowd at CitiField in more than a month, gave him a well-deserved ovation, even after he over-anxiously swung at the first big-league pitch he had seen in more than two years and grounded out harmlessly to third. Ackert: David Wright takes his final bow in a Mets uniform, but what he’ll likely be most remembered for is a genuine connection to fans

Wright has put up plenty of numbers over his 14-year career. He is a seven-time All-Star, a two-time Gold Glove winner and Silver Slugger recipient. He holds the franchise record in hits (1,777), RBI (970), runs scored (949), doubles (390), total bases (2,945), extra-base hits (658) and walks (762). He is the longest-tenured captain in franchise history and has been the face of the franchise through the early successful years and the more recent struggles with humility, grace and not a whiff of controversy. Madden: 40 years ago, my career took an improbable turn leading to an impossible home run

I don’t remember what my final story read like, other than I’m pretty sure I had all the elements of the game in it and Milton bought me dinner in New York when we got home. The story appeared in hundreds of papers around the country, mostly without a byline, just not in New York. Such was the price paid working for a wire service, where you toiled in virtual anonymity. A few months after the ’78 World Series (and the newspaper strike which Lemon credited as the biggest factor in the Yankees’ great comeback), I joined the Daily News and became the Yankee beat man, forming lasting friendships with most of the players on that 1978 team over the years. Dent, Piniella, Guidry, Gossage, Chambliss, Spencer, Randolph, White…they were all genuinely good guys and fun to cover. And I will never forget the night years later I was having a drink with Dent in a bar in Manhattan when some guy, half inebriated, came up to us and blustered: “Ahhh Bucky Dent…how many f-ing home runs did you hit in the...

That’s because despite the fact that there are over 20 million squash players across 185 nations, squash has surprisingly never been included in the list of official Olympic sports,” the Bermuda Squash Association said. “For the upcoming Youth Olympics, squash is characterized as a ‘showcase’ sport, and while this is not the ultimate status squash is seeking to achieve with the International Olympic Committee, it is the first time that squash has ever been featured in an ...

The wandering eye of Bill de Blasio: What a new email dump reveals about our mayor

De Blasio is hardly the first New York City mayor to cultivate a national profile, but the missives make it clear that from the outset of his mayoralty, he was eager to hit the road. It didn’t help matters that during his first year in office, he didn’t think the usual rules should apply to him. He did things his way: showing up late to events, driving from the Upper East Side to work out in Park Slope, and strolling into City Hall hours after most New Yorkers had arrived at work. What Instagram users need to know about Facebook’s security breach – TechCrunch

Even if you never log into Facebook itself these days, the other apps and services you use might be impacted by Facebook’s latest big, bad news. In a follow-up call on Friday’s revelation that Facebook has suffered a security breach affecting at least 50 million accounts, the company clarified that Instagram users were not out of the woods — nor were any other third-party services that utilized Facebook Login. Facebook Login is the tool that allows users to sign in with a Facebook account instead of traditional login credentials and many users choose it as a convenient way to sign into a variety of apps and services. Third-party apps and sites affected too Due to the nature of the hack, Facebook cannot rule out the fact that attackers may have also accessed any Instagram account linked to an affected Facebook account through Facebook Login. Still, it’s worth remembering that while Facebook can’t rule it out, the company has no evidence (yet) of this kind of activity. “So the v...

The news is wrong; we’re mostly all okay: A reflection, 10 years after the Crash of 2008

In its most basic sense, newsworthiness is built on a foundation of anomaly: “man bites dog.” Or here’s a second newsroom aphorism: “No one writes stories about the planes that land.” And by the way, out of 28,537 commercial flights handled by air traffic control on a given day, 28,537 take off, fly and land safely. The logical upshot of these truisms is that what you see each day on CNN or hear from those all-news radio stations who promise to “give you the world,” is not, in fact, your world. US government loses bid to force Facebook to wiretap Messenger calls – TechCrunch

US government investigators have lost a case to force Facebook to wiretap calls made over its Messenger app. A joint federal and state law enforcement effort investigating the MS-13 gang had pushed a district court to hold the social networking giant in contempt of court for refusing to permit real-time listening in on voice calls. According to sources speaking to Reuters, the judge later ruled in Facebook’s favor — although, because the case remains under seal, it’s not known for what reason. The case, filed in a Fresno, Calif. district court, centers on alleged gang members accused of murder and other crimes. The government had been pushing to prosecute 16 suspected gang members, but are said to have leaned on Facebook to obtain further evidence. Reuters said that an affidavit submitted by an FBI agent said that “there is no practical method available by which law enforcement can monitor” calls on Facebook Messenger . Although Facebook-owned WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption t...
