The news is wrong; we’re mostly all okay: A reflection, 10 years after the Crash of 2008

In its most basic sense, newsworthiness is built on a foundation of anomaly: “man bites dog.” Or here’s a second newsroom aphorism: “No one writes stories about the planes that land.” And by the way, out of 28,537 commercial flights handled by air traffic control on a given day, 28,537 take off, fly and land safely. The logical upshot of these truisms is that what you see each day on CNN or hear from those all-news radio stations who promise to “give you the world,” is not, in fact, your world.
