How to get rid of muffin tops

Excess fat on your shoulder blades and top of the hips is caused by your body’s inability to effectively break down complex carbs and sugars MUFFIN TOP & BRA STRAP BULGE “They aren’t called muffin tops for nothing,” says Calabro. “Usually the culprit is neo carbs or man-made carbs and the client needs to focus on Paleo carbs.” That’s a big NO to bread but a great tick for berries. If your body’s insulin function isn’t efficient, a minute on your lips really can turn into a lifetime on your hips. HOW TO FIX  DIET: This area responds quickly to changes in diet. Insulin is the easiest hormone to control because it responds almost instantly to anything you eat. Eating a high protein, low carbohydrate diet that includes regular meals with additional fibre will help by stabilising your blood sugar levels. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that a low GI diet helps to reduce insulin and triglycerides as well as aid weight loss. SUPPLEMENTS: “Help insulin ...

Fitbit earnings beat expectations on strength of smartwatch sales – TechCrunch

Fitbit is slowly righting its financial ship, courtesy of a successful push into the smartwatch category. The wearable company reported a profit (when adjusted for items such as stock-based compensation) thanks to growing sales in the new category.    Total revenues rose slightly to $393.6 million in the third quarter compared with the same period last year. The company did report a loss this quarter under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). But it was rosier than in previous quarters and showed that Fitbit is moving in the right direction. Net losses narrowed considerably to $2.1 million from $113.4 million this time last year. A good deal of the company’s revenue is being driven by the shift to smartwatches, which now comprise around half of Fitbit’s total revenue. It’s a gamble that’s finally starting to pay off for the company. Fitbit launched its first smartwatch in August of last year. The Ionic was the result of three high-profile acquisitions: Pebb...

Alkaline diet review

The Alkaline diet promotes a healthy pH balance within the body. But does it help with weight loss? The lowdown The theory is that you need an optimal pH balance (balance between acid and base, also known as alkaline) in your body to help you lose weight and avoid certain diseases. Doing the Alkaline Diet is meant to help you create this balance. In reality, this means cutting out ‘acid-producing’ foods, including meat, dairy, sugar, alcohol and wheat. What’s it doing to your body? “I’ve not seen any data that [this diet] is useful,” says Dr Stephen Thornley, endocrinologist at Southern Endocrine in Sydney. He says organs such as our kidney and liver help to create our acid-base balance naturally. “So we do a pretty good job of maintaining that balance ourselves without going on that sort of a diet.” Nutritionist Zoe Bingley-Pullin says there are good bits to cherry pick. “What they’re encouraging you to do is eat more of a raw-style diet,” notes Bingley-Pullin, who doesn’t o...

City Advisory: Tree Removal On Elliott Street

Image
The City of Hamilton is advising the public that it will be removing three Mahogany trees on Elliott Street due to root systems that have adversely affected City sidewalks, roadways, as well as private properties. Parks Superintendent, Steven DeSilva, said of the removal, “The City has a Street Tree Policy in place that outlines our commitment to Street Tree Management. The three mahogany trees in question have caused significant cracks and upheaval to the sidewalks and have also led to horizontal cracks in adjoining boundary walls on private property. “Following the guidelines within the policy we have in place, there is clear and definitive reasoning that supports the removal of the three specimens. Any root pruning would have to be drastic and would ultimately lead to tree failure and could pose a greater toppling hazard in high winds.” The trees will be replaced with young trees as soon as practicable and the City will use its standard tree grate/tree guard apparatus in com...

How to lose weight in your 30s

In your 30s, your hormones change and you burn 100 calories less per day than in your 20s. 1. Increase your muscle bulk Your waistline starts to expand as your total body fat increases, and muscle mass and body water decrease. This is why you’re likely to see an increase in body weight and lose some of your youthful muscle tone, and why it’s important to increase your muscle bulk now – to promote greater fat burning during exercise and higher calorie burn around the clock. Two separate parliamentary committees, in the UK and Canada, have issued an unprecedented international joint summons for Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg to appear before them. The committees are investigating the impact of online disinformation on democratic processes and want Zuckerberg to answer questions related to the Cambridge Analytica-Facebook user data misuse scandal, which both have been probing this year. More broadly, they are also seeking greater detail about Facebook’s digital policies and information governance practices — not least, in light of fresh data breaches — as they continue to investigate the democratic impacts and economic incentives related to the spread of online disinformation via social media platforms. In a letter sent to the Facebook founder today, the chairs of the UK’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) committee and the Canadian Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics (SCAIPE), Damian Collins and Bob Zimmer re...

Words matter, a lot: What President Trump fails to understand about speech and moral responsibility

Lastly, these effects happen not regarding atomized individuals, but within society’s interconnected whole. When individuals — or, worse, leaders — use language to inflict degradation, this affects people, influences people, and spreads across society. It is such words that both constitute actions themselves, affecting people’s emotional lives with utmost gravity, and lead to concrete actions, with potentially deadly costs. Apple pulls WatchOS 4.1 update after it bricked some Apple Watches – TechCrunch

PSA: If you’re an Apple Watch owner who is having trouble finding the shiny new WatchOS 4.1 update that Apple just shipped, it isn’t quite ready yet. Apple initially shipped the update on Tuesday alongside iOS 12.1, but it quickly pulled it hours later following reports that it bricked some Series 4 watches. A number of customers affected took to Reddit and Twitter to warn of the issues, which were first reported by 9to5Mac and caused some watches to be stuck on the loading screen. The update is no longer available, but Apple told those who did download it and now have bricked a watch that it is working on a fix that’ll ship as soon as possible. “Due to a small number of Apple Watch customers experiencing an issue while installing watchOS 5.1 today, we’ve pulled back the software update as a precaution,” it said in a statement. “Any customers impacted should contact AppleCare, but no action is required if the update installed successfully. We are working on a fix for ...

Food labelling: a case of natural selection?

Packaged and convenience foods line the aisles of every supermarket. Riddled with mystery chemical ingredients such as stabilisers and preservatives, their labelling can be almost impossible to decipher. Food manufacturers know that health sells, and product labelling is the front line in getting the message across to time-poor shoppers. Buzz words like ‘lite’, ‘organic’, ‘scientifically proven’, ‘healthy’ and ‘natural’ – claims often stamped on the front of packaging – can be misleading. ‘Lite’ doesn’t always refer to reduced fat content – it can be used to refer to a thinner consistency or reduced sugar. And science is often used to bamboozle consumers into thinking a product is better for them than the competitor. Who conducted the study and how big was it? What does it claim to prove? It pays to be wary of scientific claims. A product claiming to be ‘95 per cent fat free’ can in fact contain a disproportionate amount of fat. By concentrating on the portion of the product that isn...

Are you a picky eater?

Picky eating in children is common – after all, it can take years to develop a sophisticated palate. But it is increasingly acknowledged that many adults have difficulty with a variety of exotic and not-so-exotic foods – like vegetables. Susanna Nelson looks at how picky eaters can stay healthy We can all name foods we’re not too keen on – for most of us there is at least something that, for reason of taste, texture or smell, we just can’t abide, and these aversions often stem from childhood. But imagine if your list of dislikes was so long it became difficult to eat out with friends or to attend a dinner party without providing your companions with a detailed brief of what you were willing to eat. The British Journal of Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry defines picky eating, or Selective Eating Disorder, as: “…the little studied phenomenon of eating a highly limited range of foods, associated with an unwillingness to try new foods. …When this happens social avoidance, anxiet...

Fortunately, we can retrain our tastebuds. Follow our step-by-step guide to healthy shopping: 1. Choose natural, unprocessed food Consuming natural wholefoods may taste bland at first, but with patience and perseverance your taste buds will soon adjust to the healthier diet. 2. Zuckerberg says the future is sharing via 100B messages & 1B Stories/day – TechCrunch

Image
The News Feed won’t sustain Facebook forever, and that’s scaring investors. Today on Facebook’s earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg stressed that sharing is shifting to private chat, where people send 100 billion messages per day on Facebook’s family of apps, and Stories, where he says people share 1 billion of these slideshows per day (though it’s unclear if that includes third-party apps like Snapchat). But that means Facebook will have to realign its business towards these mediums where monetization is more complex and it has less experience. The result of Zuckerberg’s comments was a reversal of Facebook’s  initial 2 percent share price gain after earnings were announced that dragged it down to a 3.5 percent loss. That was only reversed when Zuckerberg said Facebook would reduce limits on video advertising, pushing shares up 3 percent in after-hours trading. Facebook’s year-over-year revenue growth has already slowed from 59 percent in Q3 2016, to 49 percent a year ago, to 33...

Why you should use a cleansing brush

Washing your face is one thing, gently polishing it with a specially developed cleansing brush is completely another. According to dermal therapist James Vivian, “Cleansing brushes are generally designed to assist the cleansing process by removing more foreign accumulations from the skin while simultaneously stimulating the complexion to detoxify and bring oxygen and nutrients to the skin from the inside-out.” Pro purchase tips: Vivian offers a word of caution for those with a delicate décolletage : “For sensitive skins, I’d recommend the use of a cleansing brush that vibrates rather than oscillates, as this will produce less friction on the skin.” He says. “As a therapist, I always recommend going gentle or soft with the brush head, simply to avoid any unnecessary reactions.” Although cleansing brushes look like they ‘scrub’, it’s still a good idea to include exfoliation in your regime: “While there is an exfoliating component to using a cleansing brush, they are g...
