Opinion: Trump is a real estate developer. He doesn't get the benefits the US gets from trade

Even Donald Trump understands he can’t win his trade wars across all fronts, from China to Mexico to Canada. The White House is now set to restart trade negotiations with Europe and to work toward “zero tariffs” on various industrial goods. Still, the President’s belief that “the US has been ripped off by other countries” is a line of reasoning that only comes naturally to a former real estate developer The post Opinion: Trump is a real estate developer. We condemn this message and the tactics of sowing distrust, division and hatred that it employs. Equity, diversity and inclusion are bedrock values of the Vanderbilt community.” she wrote. Midterm attackers cited Black Lives Matter in false flag Facebook rally – TechCrunch

Image
Unknown midterm election attackers that Facebook has removed were hosting a political rally next month that they pinned on Black Lives Matter, Antifa and other organizations, according to third-party event websites that scraped the now-removed Facebook events. Facebook provided an image of the deleted “No Unite The Right 2 – DC” event as part of its announcement today that merely showed its image, title, date, location and that a Page called “Resisters” was one of the hosts of the propaganda event. But a scraped event description TechCrunch discovered on Rallyist provides deeper insight into the disruptive information operation. Facebook won’t name the source of the election interference but said the attackers shared a connection through a single account to the Russian Internet Research Agency responsible for 2016 presidential election interference on Facebook. “We are calling all anti-fascists and people of good conscience to participate in international days of action Aug...

Column: Sea Turtles Nesting Here & Abroad

Image
[Written by Jennifer Gray] The summer months are typically nesting season for sea turtles in our region. With Bermuda’s nesting sea turtles extirpated by the late 1800’s, the idea of sea turtles nesting on our shores again causes great excitement. This was the case in 1990 and again in 1995 when loggerhead nests were found on the beaches of Coopers Island adding this species, for the first time, to the list of those known to nest on Bermuda. Even more exciting was the discovery of a green turtle nest in 2015 on a beach at Building’s Bay in St. Georges. Once nesting abundantly in Bermuda, it had been almost a century since such a sight was witnessed. Loggerhead hatchlings on Coopers Island beach, photo by Jennifer Gray Some will surmise that Bermuda’s restocking programme which transplanted eggs on Bermuda beaches from Costa Rica and Surinam in the late 60’s and early 70’s resulted in these recent sea turtle nests. This is highly unlikely based on our genetic examination of the ha...

Apple Pay is finally coming to CVS and 7-Eleven, and will soon expand to Germany – TechCrunch

Longtime Apple Pay holdout CVS will finally be adding support for Apple’s mobile payments platform this fall, along with 7-Eleven, Apple CEO Tim Cook said this afternoon on the company’s earnings call. The news is particularly notable because CVS was one of the first major retailers to snub Apple Pay, choosing instead to launch its own barcode-based mobile payments solution “CVS Pay” back in 2016, following the failure of the retailer-backed Apple Pay rival CurrentC. CVS Pay had become the first mobile payments solution the pharmacy chain adopted, after having purposefully avoided support for Apple Pay or any other rival NFC (tap to pay) technologies at its register. The company believed there was value in offering its own end-to-end solution to customers that combined both payments and loyalty, it had said. In addition, CVS had earlier backed an Apple Pay alternative called CurrentC, which was developed by the merchant consortium MCX led by major retailers like Walmart, Best Buy...

Overreacting about face recognition errors: The ACLU’s alarmism isn’t justified

The search was conducted against “tens of millions” of images in the Maryland Image Repository System (MIRS). Using the same error rates found by the ACLU, we would predict that the “tens of millions” of image comparisons would return dozens of false hits, all of which can be considered as forensic leads to be adjudicated using the demographic data accompanying the MIRS images, such as height, weight, age, and sex and through inspection by fully-trained forensic face examiners. Saints hero Steve Gleason, diagnosed with ALS in 2011, confirms he and his wife expecting their second child

Since his diagnosis early in 2011, Gleason, now 41, has used his platform as a former professional athlete to promote issues relating to the disease. Gleason and his Team Gleason foundation have made efforts to support those with ALS and similar neuromuscular disorders, with their greatest accomplishment coming with the Steve Gleason Act being signed into law in 2015. That law made vital technology more accessible to patients, requiring it to be available through Medicare and Medicaid. Donald Trump Signs First Major Education Policy Bill of His Presidency

Image
In a watershed moment for his administration on education policy, President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, according to senators who attended the signing, the first legislation Trump’s signed that makes significant changes to federal education law itself. The legislation is a reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, a $1.2 billion program last overhauled by Congress in 2006. The new law allows states to set their own goals for career and technical education programs without the education secretary’s approval, requires them to make progress toward those goals, and makes other changes to federal CTE law. Career and technical education is attracting new attention and support, but it’s also facing new challenges as programs try to evolve to meet changing labor force demands. (Click here to read Education Week ’s three-part series on CTE from last year.) Early in his presidency...

Why You Should Be Eating More Frozen Fish–and What You Need to Know Before Buying It

Fish can be a pesky thing to buy. For some of us, it’s in regular rotation, going into the cart at the supermarket or farmer’s market once or twice a week. For others, concerns about not being able to cook it before it goes bad or its often hefty price tag preclude the purchase in the first place. That’s where frozen fish comes into play. A decade ago, the Washington Post asked, “Can Chefs Cozy Up to Frozen Fish?” The article noted its lower carbon footprint, often superior quality (to the fresh stuff that is air-shipped), and Americans’ reluctance to buy frozen fish. A full 10 years later, that same publication asserts that technology has shifted to the extent that frozen fish is nowadays often of extraordinary quality, surpassing the shiny fillets you see perched on ice at the market. (A lot of the time, those have often already been frozen, too; it’s just not trumpeted on the price tag.) Although the iconic image of healthfulness for many of us involves everything fresh—maybe a v...
