Serena vs. Venus: A Tale of the Tape as the Williams sisters set for another U.S. Open showdown
Open Controversy: In the Bump Heard ‘Round the Tennis World, Irina Spirlea of Romania, walked straight into Venus as the players were going to their chairs during a changeover. It was a clear attempt to intimidate 17-year-old Venus. Spirlea was 23 and a seeded player. When Spirlea got to her chair after the bump, she was smiling at people in her friends’ box. After the match, Spirlea claimed Venus refused to move out of her way. Spirlea said, “She thinks she’s the F–king Venus Williams.” Richard Williams said Spirlea’s racism led to the collision. He called Spirlea an “ugly white turkey.” Venus took the high road, saying, “I thought we both weren’t looking. No one said, ‘Excuse me.'” Venus won the contentious match in a third-set tiebreak, 9-7. (The next day, she lost the final to Martina Hingis, 6-1, 6-1.)
