SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A northern Illinois school resource officer is being honored for stopping a gunman who fired shots inside a school while seniors gathered for graduation rehearsal. Dixon police Officer Mark Dallas attended a ceremony Wednesday in Springfield, where Gov. Bruce Rauner declared it was “Officer Mark Dallas Day” in Illinois. Dallas’ family and fellow officers also attended. U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger recognized Dallas on the House floor last week. Kinzinger says “Officer Mark Dallas is an American hero.” Dallas was in his office May 16 when he heard shots fired in a hallway. Authorities say he exchanged gunfire with senior Matthew Milby Jr. and chased him outside. He arrested the 19-year-old after shooting him in the shoulder. No one else was injured. Milby is being held on $2 million bail. Web Only Please enable JavaScript to view the comments powered by Disqus. Plum Kettle (Joy Nash), a 300-pound woman who has tried every fad diet available to her, ghostwrites the letters to the editor for Kitty Montgomery (played by Julianna Margulies and her latest in a long line of amazing wigs), the deliciously evil editor-in-chief of Daisy Chain, a Cosmopolitan lookalike that promises scarves to make you look slim and sex tips to get your way. The show opens in a world much like our own: a series of men are being taken down for their sexual crimes. But in “Dietland,” everything goes a step further, with a shadowy group called Jennifer that’s murdering rapists and tossing them off bridges and out of planes. NEW YORK (AP) — Don’t tell 20-year-old Nestor Aguilera he can’t effect change in politics. The Indiana University business major protested outside President Donald Trump’s recent appearance in Aguilera’s home of Elkhart, Indiana. And while he says he didn’t vote in 2016, he’s promising to show up for this fall’s midterm elections. “If young people decide to go out there and vote, we have the power to affect what the government does,” Aguilera said. “We could have a big impact.” Aguilera is among a small — but significant — surge of young people who say they feel politically empowered in latest Youth Political Pulse survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and MTV. It’s a change from a past survey that comes after a school shooting in Florida that elevated the voices of high school students in American politics, and five months before Americans will decide whether Trump’s Republican Party will maintain control of Congress for another two years. Whether you spread Nutella on your toast for breakfast or drizzle it on your ice cream as a late-night treat is entirely up to you—well, until now. On Tuesday, Nov. 2, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a request for Nutella consumers to submit their consumption habits of the spread, following a petition from Ferrero (the maker of Nutella) that their product be re-classified as a breakfast item. The responses, which will be collected until Jan. 3, 2017, will determine whether the fat and calories on the nutrition label will be cut in half. Currently, Nutella falls into the “Other Dessert Toppings” category under “Dessert Toppings and Fillings,” as determined by a consumer survey conducted by Ferrero in 1991. The results showed that 27 percent of the grocery shoppers surveyed preferred Nutella with ice cream, while only 8 percent enjoyed it with bread. As such, the spread’s serving size was set at 2 tablespoons (as is the standard with dessert toppings). F...

Google launches a Q&A app for neighborhood communities in India – TechCrunch

Google is increasing its focus on India after it released a new social app that’s aimed at building neighborhood communities within cities in the country. The company’s ‘Next Billion’ team in charge of emerging markets has dedicated significant resources to India. Its initiatives include data-friendly versions of YouTube and other popular services, its Tez mobile payment app, a food delivery service and a national WiFi network initiative. Now it is adding one more to the list with the release of Neighbourly, a Q&A app for sharing local knowledge. The basic goal is to give local communities an outlet to seek answers to practical questions about local life, routine and more. Google believes that an increase in urban migration, short-term leasing and busy lives has changed the dynamic of local communities and made it harder to share information quite so easily. “Life happens close to home, in order the of a 1-2km radius, and local questions come up all the time. But as ci...

No matter the opponent, Severino keeps dealing. He stifled the Astros once again Wednesday night in the Bronx, striking out 11 in seven innings in helping the Yankees win, 5-3, and take the rubber game of the series. Severino, who allowed two runs on four hits and a walk, is tied for the American League lead with eight wins and has a 2.31 ERA through 12 starts. The Yankees (35-17) are 11-1 when Severino starts. He was dominant with his slider all night, with eight of his strikeouts coming with the slider in the high 80s and looked unhittable through three innings with seven strikeouts before Jose Altuve singled with two outs in the fourth. Facebook didn’t see Cambridge Analytica breach coming because it was focused ‘on the old threat’ – TechCrunch

In light of the massive data scandal involving Cambridge Analytica around the 2016 U.S. presidential election, a lot of people wondered how something like that could’ve happened. Well, Facebook didn’t see it coming, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said at the Code conference this evening. “If you go back to 2016 and you think about what people were worried about in terms of nations, states or election security, it was largely spam and phishing hacking,” Sandberg said. “That’s what people were worried about.” She referenced the Sony email hack and how Facebook didn’t have a lot of the problems other companies were having at the time. Unfortunately, while Facebook was focused on not screwing up in that area, “we didn’t see coming a different kind of more insidious threat,” Sandberg said. Sandberg added, “We realized we didn’t see the new threat coming. We were focused on the old threat and now we understand that this is the kind of threat we have.” Moving forward, Sandberg said, Facebo...

7 Suggestions for Better School Discipline

Commentary —Steve Braden for Education Week If the Trump administration rescinds Obama-era discipline guidance, what’s next? By Michael J. Petrilli It seems pretty likely that the Trump administration will revise or rescind an Obama-era directive intended to address racial disparities in school disciplinary actions. The “Dear Colleague” letter in question, issued by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice in 2014, has been the subject of much debate of late. It stated that school districts could be investigated and found guilty of violating students’ civil rights when doling out punishments, even if the discipline policies were race-neutral and implemented in even-handed ways (in other words, even if there was no evidence of discriminatory treatment of students). Yet, the latest federal discipline data, released earlier this month, show that African-American students continue to be disciplined at higher rates than white students. While U.S. Secretary of Education ...

When Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick responded to the Santa Fe High shooting by calling on schools to reduce the number of entrances as a safety measure, advocates of stricter gun laws panned his comments online. To avoid talking about the role guns played in the shooting that killed 10 people and injured 13 others, the Republican state official was calling for “door control,” they argued. But limiting and fortifying entrances has been a school safety best practice since the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., part of a broader strategy of designing schools to promote visibility of doorways and hallways and to limit access, especially to such student-filled areas as hallways or classrooms, experts say. The arguments that followed Patrick’s statements echoed a greater chasm in debates that have intensified since the Feb. 14 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Should concerns about students’ safety be addressed through broad...

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — The domination of the Scripps National Spelling Bee by Indian-Americans has gone on long enough that a second generation has emerged. Last year, Mira Dedhia, whose mother competed in the bee three times, finished third. This year, the first child of a former champion is competing. Dr. Balu Natarajan, a physician from Hinsdale, Illinois, won in 1985 by spelling “milieu,” a word that almost certainly wouldn’t be used beyond preliminary rounds today. His 12-year-old son, Atman Balakrishnan, is making his debut this year, and his ultimate goal is to equal his father’s achievement. No pressure, though. “He does help me and try to make me work harder, because he knows that I want this,” Atman said. “If he knew that I did not want this, he would not push me.” The bee began Tuesday with 516 spellers, by far the most in its history. The expanded field means three full days of spelling instead of two. The 50 or so spellers who make the finals will be announced Wedne...

News in Brief Travis Brenda, a teacher at Rockcastle County High School in Mt. Vernon, Ky., credits teachers for his primary win. —Wade Payne/AP Weeks after the teacher walkouts in Kentucky, educators scored a surprising victory: High school math teacher Travis Brenda defeated Jonathan Shell, the House majority floor leader, in the state primary election. Brenda, who has never run for public office before, won the Republican nomination last week against Shell, who had co-authored the bill that made controversial changes to the state’s public pension system that covers teachers. The rushed passage of the bill, which moves new teachers to a hybrid pension plan, enraged educators across the state. They stormed the capitol several times this legislative session, leaving their classrooms and forcing dozens of schools to close. In the wake of the widespread activism this spring, teachers across the country have been filing to run for office. Forty current or former Kentucky edu...

They also threatened to muddy the debate among educators and policymakers about what to do next. Oliver North, the new president of the National Rifle Association, blamed recent school shootings on youngsters “steeped in a culture of violence” and who have taken the ADHD medication Ritalin since early childhood. The mass shooting on Feb. 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 people had unleashed a torrent of rage and a remarkable youth-led movement to change gun laws. Lawmakers in nearly every state have been debating a range of policies to stop school shootings. But on May 18, it happened again. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The family of one of the students killed in a Texas high school shooting filed a lawsuit against the alleged gunman’s parents, claiming the shooter’s father didn’t properly secure the weapons and were negligent in entrusting him with firearms. Authorities charged Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a 17-year-old student Santa Fe High School, with capital murder in the May 18 attack that killed eight students and two substitute teachers. Investigators said Pagourtzis used a shotgun and pistol belonging to his father that had been kept in a closet. Texas law states that guns can’t be made accessible to children under 17, with exceptions such as hunting or when under parent supervision. Parents can be charged with a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and $4,000 in fines if the child fires the weapon and causes serious injury or death. Christopher Stone and Rosie Yanas, whose son Chris Stone, 17, was killed, filed a lawsuit in Galveston County on Thursday. Stone’...
