Who gains from Facebook’s missteps? – TechCrunch

Joanna Glasner Contributor More posts by this contributor What does it take to be a startup that raises huge sums quickly? Not a minimalist? Startups will gladly store, manage and deliver your items When Facebook loses, who wins? That’s a question for startups that may be worth contemplating following Facebook’s recent stock price haircut. The company’s valuation has fallen by around $60 billion since the Cambridge Analytica scandal surfaced earlier this month and the #DeleteFacebook campaign gained momentum. That’s a steep drop, equal to about 12 percent of the company’s market valuation, and it’s a decline Facebook appears to be suffering alone. As its shares fell over the past couple of weeks, stocks of other large-cap tech and online media companies have been much flatter. So where did the money go? It’s probably a matter of perspective. For a Facebook shareholder, that valuation is simply gone. And until executives’ apologies resonate and users’ desire to click and...

MacOS finally gains external GPU support – TechCrunch

The latest update to macOS provides support for external graphics card. Apple announced this would hit the OS last June at WWDC and now it’s finally here. The update allows Mac users to increase the graphical processing power through an external graphics card connected through Thunderbolt 3. Perviously users had to buy an eGPU dev kit from Apple or employ unofficial means to enable external graphics cards, which meant Apple wouldn’t bail them out if something happened. The additional horsepower isn’t needed for general use, but the added graphics cards supercharge Macs for VR rendering and gaming. Only a handful of eGPUs are compatible with macOS so choose carefully before adding one to your rig. The feature comes from the High Sierra 10.13.4 Combo Update which also adds Business Chat in Messages, a new iTunes and a super handy feature to Safari in which users can jump to the right-most open tab by using Command+9. Police say they have seized what they believe “could be one of Northern Ireland’s largest ever hauls of herbal cannabis”. The drug was intercepted and five people were arrested by PSNI officers on Friday. It following a joint operation by the PSNI, gardaí (Irish police) and Irish customs officials. The drugs were found in an industrial sized fuel tank on a shipping pallet at a property in Dromore, County Down. The PSNI said three men and two women were detained at the property. Police also carried out “a number of follow up searches and enquiries at other locations”. PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Stephen Martin said the seizure demonstrated “the effectiveness of real-time intelligence sharing and cross-border collaboration”. “With the assistance of our colleagues in An Garda Síochána and Revenue Commissioners we have undoubtedly prevented the significant harm that would have resulted from this huge consignment of drugs reaching the streets of both Northern Ireland and the Repu...

Judge says Utah teen won’t be released in bomb attempt case

ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A Utah teenager accused of trying to set off a homemade bomb at his high school and defacing another school with pro-ISIS graffiti poses too big of a threat to public safety to be released before a preliminary hearing in May, a judge has ruled. Judge Paul Dame said Wednesday the unidentified 16-year-old will remain in juvenile detention. No explosion resulted and no one was hurt March 5 after a backpack with the explosive device was found emitting smoke in a common area of Pine View High School. Charging documents say the boy told police that if someone got hurt, he probably wouldn’t care. He’s also charged with misdemeanor graffiti and abuse of a flag for allegedly cutting up an American flag and spray-painting words including “ISIS” on a wall at a different high school in nearby Hurricane. The FBI determined the terrorist group was not involved. According to court documents, the teen told investigators he wanted to make it look like the group was invo...

Opinion: If we want to stop Putin, we need to go after his sources of money

More than 100 Kremlin diplomats in over 20 countries are in the midst of packing their belongings for their impending transfer back to Russia. But lost in the celebration of the show of force by Britain and its allies is an appreciation of the challenges these expulsions will ultimately pose to US intelligence agencies and the potential opportunity to truly impose costs on Moscow. Commentary —Getty Research suggests SNAP benefits, which are facing funding cuts, are already insufficient By Anna Gassman-Pines & Laura Bellows Imagine two children in the same school sit down to take their end-of-grade tests on the same day. One child’s family just received its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (formerly known as Food Stamps), while the other received its benefits three weeks earlier. In our newly published study, we find that the second child tends to score slightly higher than the first on both reading and math tests. That’s likely because the second child took the test after several weeks of sufficient food at home and decreased family stress. And even a small difference in test performance can matter, because the second child would also be more likely to meet state standards for grade-level proficiency. In several states, meeting such grade-level standards in certain grades is a requirement for children to advance to the next ...

Dan Le Batard laughs hysterically at way Marlins season opens

The Miami Marlins were the best joke Dan Le Batard heard Thursday. On Thursday’s “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz,” producer Billy Gill called into the show for the first pitch of the Marlins season. That pitch was sent flying as Cubs center fielder Ian Happ homered to rub salt in the wounds of a hurting Marlins fanbase. Happ’s first-pitch blast caused Le Batard to erupt in laughter and mock Marlins CEO and Yankees legend Derek Jeter. “Welcome Derek Jeter! And that concludes our Marlins coverage for the season!,” Le Batard gleefully shouted.  Le Batard, one of the most prominent sports voices in Miami, has not been shy about throwing shade towards the Marlins this offseason. Jeter and the new ownership have gutted the franchise of all of its big name players like Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich. In December, Le Batard had an intense interview with MLB commissioner Rob Manfred where he asked Manfred if he was aware new ownership planned ...

US says Russia 'should not be acting like a victim' following expulsions

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Thursday that Moscow “should not be acting like a victim” and rejected the Russian government’s suggestion that it is taking reciprocal action by expelling 60 US diplomats and closing the American consulate in St. Petersburg — a move that followed Washington’s decision to expel 60 alleged intelligence officers from the United States earlier this week. Tish James wants clarity on DEP’s predicted 80% water price surge

Public Advocate Letitia James wants an explanation from the Department of Environmental Protection about their projections that water rates could swell 80% by 2027. The city agency has projected that the average water bill for a single-family home could grow from $1,055 in 2017 to $1,898 by 2027, and from $686 to $1,234 for multi-family unit, according to James’ office. That’s based on DEP spending projections, including $20 billion in capital plan spending over 10 years. “We should not increase the burden on the millions of hardworking homeowners in New York City,” James told the Daily News. “The drastic water rate increase being proposed by DEP will be a blow to New Yorkers when it goes into effect. This is neither fair nor sound public policy and New Yorkers deserve immediate answers.” In a letter sent to DEP Commissioner Vincent Sapienza, she said her office has been unable to get further clarity on the projections after a February 28 New York City Audit Committee meetin...

Baidu’s streaming video service iQiyi falls 13.6% in Nasdaq debut – TechCrunch

The streaming video service iQiyi, a business owned by China’s online search giant Baidu, dropped 13.6% in its first day of trading on the Nasdaq — closing at $15.55, or down $2.45 from its opening price of $18. The company still managed to pull off one of the largest public offerings by a Chinese tech company in the past two years raising $2.25 billion — the only Chinese technology company to make a larger splash in U.S. markets is Alibaba — the commercial technology juggernaut which raised $21.5 billion in its public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014. “It’s a special day and an exciting day for iQiyi, and I will say it’s also an exciting day for the Chinese internet,” said Baidu chief executive Robin Li of the iQiyi public offering.”Eight years ago, when we got started, we were not the first one, we were not the largest one, but we gradually worked our way up, and caught up and surpassed everyone. It has been not an easy journey, but finally we are public. We surpass...

What Is Vegan Cheese Exactly—and Should You Be Eating It?

[Brightcove:4928980311001] When non-vegans try to wrap their heads around the diet, their sticking point is often not whole milk, nor even creamy ice cream, but cheese. Ah, cheese. Those who choose a vegan diet, or whose allergies make it necessary, often find themselves missing cheese. Many who forgo it report that—taste- and texture-wise—it’s a difficult food to replicate. So if you’re casting about for nut-based or soy-based cheese alternatives, it’s worth considering both health and taste. As Jonah Soolman, RD, told Health via email, “We might use cheese and their vegan alternatives in similar fashions, but that does not mean they are nutritionally the same. Nut-based and soy-based ‘cheeses’ tend to be lower in calcium than real cheese.” This doesn’t make these alternatives “bad” or “unhealthy,” explains Soolman. “It just makes them different.” If you’re switching from vegetarianism and consuming a substantial amount of cheese, for example, and “rely on [it] as a significant cal...

Spring training is in the books and the 2018 Major League Baseball regular season is finally underway. Twenty-six teams will be playing in what’s a traditional Opening Day on Thursday. Not every team has realistic playoff aspirations, of course, but hope — foolish or otherwise — is part of the beauty of Opening Day. Speaking of which, here’s how you can watch all of those Opening Day baseball games: Chicago Cubs at Miami Marlins Date : Thursday, Mar. 29 Time : 12:40 p.m. ET Location : Marlins Park Starting Pitchers : Jon Lester vs. Jose Urena TV Channel : Fox Sports Florida, WGN, ESPN (check local listings) Online Stream : MLB.tv, WatchESPN Live Stats : GameTracker Cardinals at New York Mets Date : Th...

Everything You Need To Know To Start Cycling To Work

Image
Nick Harris-Fry 28 Mar 2018 All the advice and gear required to get on your bike and start the day off on a natural high According the National Travel Survey two-thirds of people in Great Britain aged over five never cycle or cycle less than once a year on average, and a European Commission survey found that only 4% of people in the UK cycle daily. These aren’t impressive numbers – in the EU, only Cyprus (2%) and Malta (1%) have a lower percentage of daily cyclists. If the numbers increased to nearer the 43% of people in the Netherlands who cycle daily, the benefits would be incredible, both individually and for society as a whole – think reduced air pollution and a healthier population reducing the pressure on health services. And as more people start to cycle, the infrastructure will continue to improve, which in turn leads to more cyclists cycling in safer environments. So ask yourself, why aren’t you cycling to work? And hopefully whatever reasons you come up with will ...

Push for Higher Teacher Pay Has a New Starting Point: Facebook

Image
Arizona teachers and education advocates march at the state capitol in Phoenix on March 28, protesting low teacher pay and school funding. Protests like this one and the previous rallies in West Virginia have been largely organized on social media. —Ross D. Franklin/AP The successful West Virginia teacher strike has lit the match for a spate of teacher uprisings across the country. The main place teachers are gathering to strategize? Facebook. Although Facebook has been under fire lately for its involvement in a data-harvesting effort that may have influenced the 2016 election, for teachers, the embattled social-media platform has recently proved a lever for democracy. In right-to-work states where unions don’t have as strong a presence, teachers have used Facebook to rally support and launch grassroots movements for higher pay—and with some success. West Virginia educators started the trend with a nine-day, teacher-driven strike this month that concluded when the legislat...

Here’s Cambridge Analytica’s plan for voters’ Facebook data – TechCrunch

More details have emerged about how Facebook data on millions of US voters was handled after it was obtained in 2014 by UK political consultancy Cambridge Analytica for building psychographic profiles of Americans to target election messages for the Trump campaign. The dataset — of more than 50M Facebook users — is at the center of a scandal that’s been engulfing the social network giant since newspaper revelations published on March 17 dropped privacy and data protection into the top of the news agenda. A UK parliamentary committee has published a cache of documents provided to it by an ex CA employee, Chris Wylie, who gave public testimony in front of the committee at an oral hearing earlier this week. During that hearing he said he believes data on “substantially” more than 50M Facebookers was obtained by CA. Facebook has not commented publicly on that claim. Among the documents the committee has published today (with some redactions) is the data-licensing contract between Globa...
