CedarBridge Academy Prizegiving Ceremony – Bernews

Image
Minister of Education Diallo Rabain, recently attended the CedarBridge Academy annual Prizegiving Ceremony. This year the guest speaker and former CedarBridge student, Jahnae Harvey [Class of 2018] spoke on the school theme Level UP. Ms. Harvey spoke to over 100 students who were recognized for their academic achievements. Ms. Harvey challenged students not to compare themselves to others and to continuously push to improve their current point of elevation. She said, “I challenge you to level up past your current point of elevation because with the sky being the limit there is no end point to how high you can elevate. “The more involved you are, whether it be extracurricular activities, volunteering, or positive social groups, the more material you will gather to build up the steps, allowing you to level up.” “Allow yourself to have consistent success at your current level before attempting to move up,” she stated. “Don’t be afraid of leveling up!” Ms. Harvey works at Tomorrow...

Facebook adds free TV shows Buffy, Angel, Firefly to redefine Watch – TechCrunch

Image
Facebook hasn’t had a hit show yet for its long-form video hub Watch, so it’s got a new plan: digging up some deceased cult favorites from television. First up, Facebook is making all episodes of Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly free on Facebook Watch. There’ll be simultaneous viewing Watch Parties where fans can live-comment together for Buffy at 3 pm PT today, Angel tomorrow at 12 pm PT and Firefly on Sunday at 12 pm PT. Facebook recruited Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar to promote the launch. These shows aren’t original, and they’re far from exclusive, as they’re included in a Hulu subscription and are available to rent or buy on other platforms. But at least they’re not run-of-the-mill web content. With Facebook’s remake of MTV’s Real World not arriving until Spring 2019, these sci-fi and horror shows are the most high-profile programs available on the free ad-supported streaming service. The hope is that fans of these shows will come get ...

Apple Music is coming to the Amazon Echo – TechCrunch

Starting mid-December, Amazon Echo devices will be able to stream songs from Apple Music. A bit of a surprise, perhaps, given that Apple’s been a competitor in the space since launching the HomePod back in 2017. Amazon’s had its own music service for some time, as well, but the company appears to have given up on the dream of being a serious competitor in the space — for now, at least. Instead, Echo smart speakers offer native support for a decent cross-section of streaming services, including Pandora, Spotify, iHeartRadio and TuneIn. The new skill lets users play specifics songs, genres, playlists and the Beats 1 station through the smart speakers. Adding Apple Music will help the popular smart home products tap into a rapidly growing service. The company cracked 50 million subscribers earlier this year. That’s still well behind the 83 million paid subscribers Spotify announced back in July, but this addition should help give Amazon an added advantage against Google’s Home devices...

BPSU: School Principals On ‘Work To Rule’

Image
Last month the BPSU, on behalf of School Principals, informed the Ministry of Education that principals had voted to work to rule, and the work to rule continues, with the BPSU noting that “it is essential that the educators be supported by the Ministry of Education in their continuing efforts to improve students’ outcomes and experiences in the 21st century classrooms.” This statement is the latest in a series involving educators expressing their dissatisfaction, with all the teachers at West Pembroke School calling in sick today after agreeing to go on work to rule earlier this month, In addition, earlier this month the Bermuda Union of Teachers [BUT] confirmed that teachers have “voted to take ‘appropriate action’ over a series of issues they say are negatively impacting schools and students.” BPSU General Secretary Edward Ball Jr said, “On October 19, 2018, the Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU], on behalf of School Principals, informed the Ministry of Education that princip...

QC In Same Sex Marriage Appeal Cost $61K

Image
The cost to the Government for the services of James Guthrie QC for the recent same sex marriage appeal were just over $61,000 – his legal costs were $53,339.80, and his travel and accommodation costs were $7,848.21, the Government said this morning. A Government spokesperson said, “The Minister of Home Affairs Walter Roban would like to make clear to the public that the figure of $400,000 which has been widely and repeatedly reported in the media as the cost to the Bermuda Government of the Appeal in the ‘Attorney-General v Ferguson and Others’ case, is greatly exaggerated, false and incorrect. “On 26th November, the Minister of Home Affairs committed to the public that, once a final figure has been determined regarding the Appeal, he would provide that figure. “Government is not yet aware of any costs filed by the opposing counsels, however we can report that the cost to the Government for the services of Mr. James Guthrie, QC totalled $61,188.01. Lime claims it didn’t know controversial PR firm Definers would sling mud at rivals – TechCrunch

Scooter startup Lime has confirmed it hired Definers but claimed it didn’t know the controversial PR firm would try to smear its rivals. The company was speaking during an on stage interview here at TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin. Definers was recently revealed to have carried out so-called ‘opposition research’ on entities critical of Facebook . Including by leveraging anti-semitic conspiracy theories about billionaire George Soros, according to the New York Times, which broke the story earlier this month. At the same time it emerged that other tech firms had also been using Definers — Lime being one of them. And, as we reported earlier, the PR firm pitched us a suggestive email seeking to throw mud on scooter rival Bird. “I read your piece on Bird’s custom scooter and delivery. Just wanted to flag that Bird’s numbers seem off based on what they have listed on their website. They’ve taken a bunch off the list. Seems odd since they just announced 100 cities two weeks ago....

James & Cipres Win Gold At France Grand Prix

Image
Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres claimed their second Grand Prix gold medal this season as competition wrapped up at the Internationaux de France in Grenoble earlier this month. A story at ISU.org says, “Performing to “Wicked Game” and “The Last Feeling”, James/Cipres produced a triple twist, triple toe-double toe-double toe combination, throw triple flip and Salchow as well as a level-four lift, spin and death spiral. The only major glitch came when James doubled the triple Salchow. The French pair scored 140.53 points and to 205.77 points overall.” “We’re really happy to win this competition,” Cipres said.”It’s the first time for us to win two Grand Prix in the season and to go to the Grand Prix Final. We have a lot of work to do for these next two weeks.” Vanessa James said, “We’re both happy with the fight today, especially after a disappointing short program yesterday. We’re very proud to have our second gold medal at a Grand Prix. “We just have more work to do mentally and...

Facebook exempts news outlets from political ads transparency labels – TechCrunch

Image
Facebook pissed off journalists earlier this year when it announced that ads run by news publishers to promote their articles involving elected officials, candidates and national issues would have to sport “paid for by…” labels and be included alongside political campaign ads in its ads transparency archive that launched in June, albeit in a separate section. The News Media Alliance — representing 2,000 newspapers, including The New York Times and NewsCorp, plus other new organizations — sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg in June protesting their inclusion. They claimed it would blur the lines between propaganda and journalism, and asked Facebook to exempt news publishers. Now Facebook has granted that exception. Next year once Facebook has figured out more ways to verify legitimate news organizations that publish with bylines and dates, cite sources and don’t have a history of having stories flagged as false by third-party fact checkers, they’ll no longer have their U.S. ads ...

‘We had to pay £300 each just to view a property’

A letting agency has been demanding hundreds of pounds in payment before prospective tenants are allowed to view properties for rent, the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme has found. The practice, by Flintons, breaches guidelines and could be unlawful. Magdiele, Mariely and a friend said they were told they had to pay £300 each before they could see a property. Flintons, in London, denied any wrongdoing and said it did not charge any fees for viewings. It said the payments were taking as a “holding deposit”.
